Everyone has something that makes or breaks a game for them: music, HD GRAFIX, gameplay, story, voice acting, innovation, reviews...
What's yours?

For me personally, it's the story of a game that determines my ultimate opinion (ironic considering Pokémon is one of my favorite series). The graphics could be terrible, the gameplay could be sub-par, but as long as the story is something I enjoy chances are I'll like the game.
Which is why I hadn't been disappointed by any 3D Sonic game until Colors. It was fun, yeah, but I couldn't get into the story.
I'm especially a sucker for time travel, forgotten destroyed civilizations, dark futures, and worldwide dictatorships. Overused clichés though they may be.

So I'm curious, what ultimately decides a game for you?

If it looks cool.

I just read pokemon sites for new games.

Excited about the upcoming one that isn't revealed yet.

Mostly Music and Gameplay.
I don't really care much about the story (not that I like them or not,) because it affects the gameplay only a tad bit, and I can live without the "tad bit".

Hell, it could be an 8-Bit game, but if it has good gameplay and music it is good for me.

Pokémon is an exception... kinda. While it has super repetitive gameplay, when you get to a high level (50+) It feels like you are accomplishing something huge, lol

If it's playable, I love it. Got decent story & character (even if they're unoriginal), I like it. It mostly depends on the game. Take the Shadow the Hedgehog game, for example. Despite it having neither qualities that fit my tastes, what saved me from throwing the game away was its horribleness. It was a joke of itself and that was the only enjoyable part of the game... making fun of it.

In fact, the worse the game is, the more inspiring it gets. A game could be so horriblely bad that I'd be inspired enough to have to write a far better version of said game.

2. gameplay
3. music

really, I have to agree iwth the same things Blixx said.

Though one thing that really doesn't matter to me is graphics, which is why Mega Man 9 is a good game. I mean sure, it was 8-bit, but who cares: It was great gameplay, an OK storyline, and had some of the best music (not to mention Robot Masters) of the entire series.

Holy crap, did I love Concrete Jungle.

I agree with Marly, i'm a big sucker for post game stuff in Ogre Tactics (Even after reaching the level cap, i'm still playing it)

For me it is mainly gameplay and story. Pokemon for example has such great gameplay it has people buying it over and over each year.
Another one of my favorite games, Kingdom Hearts, in my opinion, has the greatest story in a game.
Graphics isn't very important to me because, hell, I started playing pokemon in '99.
Music is also something that I don't really care that much about because you always have the option to mute. But it is definitely a bonus if a game has good music.
Same pretty much goes for everything else

I would say gameplay and story are the most important, but I could play a game where the gameplay is the best thing ever but the story is blah (Pokemon <3) and vice versa. I would say music is an extra thing, like, I LOVE my games to have great music. <3 And I don't like muting games either, so like, I guess that would be 3rd.

But I'd probably say Story and Gameplay.

I like the games determined on:
series(ex. sonic, megaman...)

Reply Risky2k, May 4th, 2011, 4:04 pm

Gameplay and story. I like long, twisty, confusing anime story. The gameplay is equally as important.

@Reign of Chaos:

Gameplay, Voice Acting, Innovation, Reviews. Fuck stories. Super Mario Bros. (1986) barely had a story and it was epic.

Graphics? Pfft. Graphics don't make or break a game. CoD only sold well because (OMG WARR GAEM MODERNESS I JIZZ MY PANTS).
